Logo for the Arecibo Observatory

The Arecibo Observatory is perhaps best known for its large radio telescope that was used in part to search for extraterrestrial intelligence. In 1974, a coded message was broadcast into outer space with basic information about planet Earth. When the binary message is converted to pixels, a primitive image reveals various technical details surrounding a human figure, which inspired this new mark.
